Tyre Replacement Gold Coast
When it is time for new tyres, Southport Budget Tyres & Auto will fit them the same day, at a price we will beat any written quote on. We are at 37 Egerton Street, Southport, and we have been replacing tyres for Gold Coast drivers for over 20 years.
New tyres start from as little as $35 fitted, and we carry everything from budget options through to premium brands. Whichever end of the range you are shopping in, the fitting standard is the same.
When do your tyres need replacing?
There are four reasons to replace a tyre. Any one of them is enough:
- Tread depth. In Queensland the legal minimum is 1.5mm across the tread face. Grip in the wet falls away well before that point, so most drivers should be shopping at around 3mm rather than waiting for the limit.
- Age. Rubber hardens over time whether the tyre is used or not. A tyre with plenty of tread can still be past its useful life. Check the four-digit date code on the sidewall — we will read it for you.
- Damage. Sidewall bulges, cuts, cracking or a puncture in the shoulder cannot be safely repaired. Tread punctures often can be.
- Uneven wear. If one part of the tread is gone while the rest looks fine, the tyre needs replacing and the underlying cause needs fixing.
Not sure? Drive in and we will check them free of charge.
How to read your tyre size
Everything we need is printed on the sidewall. A marking like 205/55R16 91V breaks down as:
- 205 — tread width in millimetres
- 55 — aspect ratio, the sidewall height as a percentage of the width
- R16 — radial construction, 16 inch rim diameter
- 91V — load index and speed rating
Read those numbers to us over the phone and we can quote you on the spot. Do not guess the load and speed rating — fitting below your vehicle manufacturer specification is unsafe and can affect insurance.
What is included when we replace your tyres
Every tyre replacement at our Southport workshop includes:
- Removal of your old tyres and disposal handled for you
- Fitting of the new tyres to your existing rims
- Balancing of every wheel we fit
- Valve replacement where required
- Pressures set to your vehicle specification
We will also point out anything we notice while the wheels are off — worn brake pads, a leaking shock, perished bushes — without any obligation to have it done here.
How many tyres should you replace at once?
Ideally all four, because matched tyres give the most predictable handling. In practice, plenty of people replace two, and that is perfectly reasonable.
If you are replacing two, fit the new pair to the rear axle. It is counter-intuitive, but new tyres on the back keep the rear of the car stable under braking in the wet. New tyres on the front with worn rears makes a car far more likely to spin.
If you are replacing a single tyre, match it as closely as possible to its partner on the same axle. If budget is the constraint, our used tyres range starts at 75% tread and is often the sensible answer for a one-off replacement.
Choosing the right tyre
The right tyre depends on the car and how you drive it:
- Passenger tyres for everyday cars and family vehicles
- 4×4 and SUV tyres in highway, all-terrain and mud patterns
- Performance tyres for sports and low profile applications
- Commercial tyres for vans and light trucks
See the brands we supply, or ask us — tell us your budget and how you use the car and we will narrow it down rather than upselling you.
Always align after new tyres
A car that is out of alignment will wear a brand new set of tyres out early, in exactly the same pattern it wore the last set. If your old tyres show uneven wear, get the alignment checked at the same time. See wheel alignment.

Tyre replacement questions
How long does it take to replace four tyres?
Usually well under an hour for a standard passenger vehicle. Most customers wait rather than leaving the car.
Do I need an appointment?
Not always, but calling ahead means we can confirm your size is in stock and have it ready.
Can you repair my tyre instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. A puncture in the tread area can usually be repaired safely. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder cannot be — that tyre must be replaced.
What do you do with my old tyres?
We take them and handle disposal for you. There is nothing for you to arrange.
Will you really beat any quote?
Bring in a written quote for the same tyre and we will beat it. That is the basis of how we have traded for two decades.
Do you fit tyres I bought elsewhere?
Give us a call to discuss it — in most cases we can help.
